Water Conservation Framework
Participant Profile

Municipal Entity:            City of Hamilton

Resolution Passed:        Yes

Overview of water conservation plan:

  • The City initiated its Water Meter Project in the spring of 2002 and  contracted the Water Wise Water Meter Installation team to implement the program.  Residents who have chosen not to permit the installation of water meter and remote reading device will be charged a double flat rate for water and sewer each year in accordance with Waterworks By-law R84-026.

  • The Wise Water Use Program is a partnership between the City of Hamilton and Green Venture. This program was designed to educate Hamilton water users on the importance of local water resources and various methods of using water wisely.

  • Since 2000, Public Works has participated in a school education program for Grade 5 students, which meets the provincial curriculum criteria. To-date, approximately 23,000 students and 500 teachers have taken part. In addition to the provincial curriculum provided to teachers, the educational package for students includes water conservation tips and products.

  • New Environmental Laboratory and Administration building opened in August 2005.  This facility has the potential to be Canada's first accredited LEED laboratory.  The improved energy and environmental design of this facility provide an opportunity to utilize many conservation techniques which will result in a water-use reduction of over 50 percent.
