GLSLCI - Priorities

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative recognizes the significance of the Great Lakes as a key element in the economic well being and quality of life for the citizens of their communities. At the same time, there are major threats to the resource that need the full attention and cooperation of local, state, federal, and tribal governments, as well as industry, environmental groups, and others committed to protection and restoration of the Great Lakes. In order to focus the energy and resources of the people working on the Great Lakes, it is necessary to identify priorities for action. The mayors believe these issues need more attention and resources earlier than others, but also recognize that some work must continue on other matters to make sure they are addressed properly.

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative and the Council of Great Lakes Governors share the same priorities and this close alignment gives added strength to their working partnership. The mayors look forward to working with all parties on actions to solve the problems and advance the protection and restoration of the Great Lakes.

Sustainable Water Use – Ensure the sustainable use of our water resources while confirming that the States retain authority over water use and diversions of Great Lakes waters.

Human Health - Promote programs to protect human health against adverse effects of pollution in the Great Lakes ecosystem.

Diffuse Sources - Control pollution from diffuse sources into water, land and air.

Toxics - Continue to reduce the introduction of persistent bioaccumulative toxics into the Great Lakes ecosystem.

Invasive Species – Stop the introduction and spread of non-native aquatic invasive species.

Habitat – Enhance fish and wildlife by restoring and protecting coastal wetlands, fish and wildlife habitats.

Areas of Concern Restore to environmental health the Areas of Concern identified by the International Joint Commission as needing remediation.

Information Management - Standardize and enhance the methods by which information is collected, recorded and shared within the region.

Sustainable Use Practices – Adopt sustainable use practices that protect environmental resources and may enhance the recreational and commercial value of our Great Lakes.
