Municipal Entity:            City of Toledo

Overview of water conservation plan (under development):

  • In an effort to improve water metering abilities, the City is in teh process of installing automatic meter reading devices.  To date, over 2,000 households have been switched over and another 2,000 are scheduled for 2009/2010.

  • The City of Toledo, Division of Water Distribution has crews dedicated to locating water loss and repairing leaks in the water distribution system.  The Division of Water Distribution also has a comprehensive asset management program that tracks equipment usage and age.  This is a proactive appraoc to insure efficiencies within the water distribution system.

  • In 2007, the City along with other community partners established the Rain Garden Initiative (RGI) to improve water quality and encourage low impact development practices.  In the past year, RGI branched out into the promotion of rain barrels as a water conservation measure.  The rain barrel is attached to the downspout and collects rainwater that can be used to water lawns or gardens.  To date, RGI has sold over 400 rain barrels.
