Overview of water conservation plan:

  • In 2004 a new tax was levied specifically ear-marked for water infrastructure renewal, as part of a $200 M per year special investment fund. 
  • 30,000 Industrial/Commercial/Institutional meters to be installend in the next five years.
  • Installation of 450 sites measuring flow or pressure and installation of 150 sites of regulation across the water network in the next ten years to follow and optimize water distribution.
  • Major investments in reconstruction and rehabilitation of underground infrastructures.
  • Team of inspectors for leak detection.
  • The 2008 Réseau Environnement campaign has highlighted the need to reduce wastage and preserve drinking water. It has also raised awareness to the costs of drinking water and the need to cover these costs, informed citizens about the impact of consumption on the infrastructures in peak periods and quality of water distributed. At least, one activity awareness occurred in each district reaching directly almost 1 700 people and 286 children at day camps. Overall, more than 1 600 000 people in Montreal have been targeted by the program of saving water.
