Overview of water conservation plan:

  • Industrial, commercial, residential water metering program since the early 1960's. 
  • Public education programs through advertising, conservation programs (installation of low flow showerheads and aerators), and school programs where staff visit schools to promote water conservation.
  • Currently investigating a social-based marketing program through which visits would be made to homes and small businesses to educate on water conservation techniques and the value of conserving water.
  • Extensive leak detection program to be instituted in the coming year.
  • Sanitary sewer charges are based on water meter consumption, which further promotes conservation efforts.
  • The Town has participated in a joint conservation program with the electrical utility and has also installed efficient shower heads.
  • In 2008/2009 the Town started a ULFT rebate program and purchased automated leak detection equipment to survey the complete distribution system.

Water conservation achievements to date:

  • Efforts to date have reduced water loss from 25% down to below 20% over the last few years.
  • Increased demand for water due to growth has been met without major capital expenditures.
