The North Beach on the Lake Michigan Coastline Recognized Sustainable
The Blue Wave Certification obtained by the City of Racine for North Beach from the Clean Beaches Council demonstrates the city's leadership in the protection of its coastline and adjacent Lake Michigan waters. One highlight of Racine's North Beach restoration activities involved the installation of dunes swales. Artificial sand dunes form vegetated embankments beneficial in reducing the adverse impacts of storm water runoff on the lake via erosion reduction and increased infiltration. By engaging citizen volunteer assistance on the project, it also served to heighten public awareness.
