Ontario Opportunities


1. Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) has created a program in order to support municipalities across Canada towards improving the environment, quality of life, and local economies.

It provides grants up to 50% of costs, up to $350,000 in total, for community plans that are focused on specific targets for environmental performance.

Also provides grants up to 50% of costs, up to $350,000 in total, for studies and field tests related to municipal programs on brownfields, energy, transportation, waste, or water.

Finally, the Green Municipal Fund provides loans of up to 80% of total costs, with maximum of $4 million, at 1.5% lower than the Government of Canada bond rate to projects again dealing with brownfields, energy, transportation, waste, or water. This is also normally combined with up to $400,000 in grants.

2. ecoENERGY for Renewable Power

With the goal of improving Canada’s supply of clean electricity from renewable sources such as wind, bio-mass, low-impact hydro, geothermal, solar photovoltaic, and ocean energy, the Government of Canada has established the ecoEnergy for Renewable Power, which will invest $1.48 billion in such projects.

Businesses, municipalities, institutions, and organizations are all eligible to receive funding for related projects.

The program will provide incentives of one cent per-kilowatt-hour for up to 10 years to eligible low-impact renewable electricity projects constructed over the next 4 years.

3. TD Friends of the Environment Foundation

The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation is another private foundation that has given millions in grants towards environmental initiatives. The Foundation focuses on areas such as “Protecting and preserving the Canadian environment, assisting young Canadians in understanding and participating in Environmental activities, supporting urban renewal such as environmental projects to rejuvenate smaller or at-risk neighborhoods and ‘main streets, and enhancing cooperation among Environmental organizations.”

Municipalities are eligible to apply

4. Ontario Trillium Foundation


The Trillium Foundation is an agency of the government of Ontario. It is Canada’s leading charitable grant-making foundation. It supports areas such as arts and culture, environment, human and social services, and sports and recreation sectors.

The Foundation encourages initiatives that focus on improving air and water quality in order to improve the health and well-being on humans.

Grant applications deadlines are March 1st, July 1st, and November 1st of every year.

Only municipalities that have a population of 20,000 or smaller are able to apply.
